Born in Nelson, New Zealand, Sarah graduated in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts and Media from NMIT. With her graduation work, Beyond Measure, Sarah received two major awards – the Jens Hansen Excellence Award and the Nelson Suter Art Society Graduate Award. The work will be exhibited at the Suter Art Gallery, Nelson May 28th until 10th June 2018.
While Sarah enjoys painting and graphic design, in her most recent works she explores key themes of memory and memorialisation within the context of the First World War. Motivated by a significant number of her kin serving with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at Gallipoli and the Western Front, Sarah focused on rebuilding memories from archival fragments, creating a work that does not judge, blame or glorify, it simply remembers.
Michael Greaves from the Dunedin School of Art observed the work “both links to the local community and is universal in reach” and has been “created with sensitivity to the terrible trauma of war and the haptic qualities of the thoughtfully chosen material.”1
